Five for Friday!

Welcome to a new-ish feature here at Little Red Reviewer, called Five for Friday. The concept is simple – it’s a Friday, and I post a photo of 5 books, and then we chat about them in the comments.
The only things these books have in common are:
– they were on my bookshelf
– I’m interested in your thoughts on them.

New Amsterdam by Elizabeth Bear (2010) I bought this a few years ago, haven’t picked it up to read yet. A lot of readers swear by Bear’s writing. I’ve dipped my toes into her work a few times, and found myself stumbling over word patterns and phrasings. Maybe this will be the book that turns me into a Bear fan?
Big Damn Hero by James Lovegrove (2018) – bought this for the Hubs, who is a huge Firefly fan. He said it’s fun! and there’s a sequel coming soon! I should give it a read, it does look like a fun weekend read.
The Million by Karl Schroeder (2018) – I am embarrassed to say I don’t know a thing about this novella. Anyone read it? is it good?
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (2008) – hello to one of my all time favorite fantasy novels! This is one of the books that got me into fantasy way back when, I still remember getting it in hardback out of the library. I remember putting in a request at my library for them to order the sequel (the person who places the order gets the book first!), and taking PTO from work to stay at home and read. I want to reread this, but it is a ridiculous and unnecessary gazillion pages. Is there an abridged version?
Snow White Learns Witchcraft by Theodora Goss (2019) – lots of very short stories and very short poems, all fairy tale retellings or related. I enjoyed most of the short stories, was pleasantly surprised how much of the poetry I enjoyed. Poetry is usually lost on me.

Thank you for the reminder! I bought Snow White Learns Witchcraft on your recommendation but it somehow got buried on the bottom of the TBR pile (it happens…). I need to start reading this.

this one’s nice, most of the stories are super short. You can literally open it to nearly any page and start reading. I’m super interested in your thoughts on “A Country Called Winter”, and “Red as Blood and White as Bone”

Of the five, I loved the Rothfuss series. The characters were good. It is a coming of age in a magical society story. I have not read Firefly but the TV series and movie are great. I have rewatched them numerous times.

oh gosh, we’ve watched the Firefly series and movie so many times in my house i have entire scenes memorized. and that’s a good thing! Like you, I really liked the characters in the Rothfuss series. What a fun TV show that would make!

I’ve been sitting on hold at the library for the Firefly novel for months. Want it so badly. Love that series. I think this one may be a prequel? Idk. One of the new ones is, I think. I need to read the comics, too.
Haven’t read Kingkiller because I’m trying to avoid series where they’re never going to finish.
I’m a sucker for fairytale retellings. Seanan McGuire is my favorite for this.

for months? You might be able to get it quicker through interlibrary loan. ask at your library about ILL, it’s THE BEST.

I use ILL all the time. But they charge a dollar to help with shipping and I’m both poor and patient so I wait.

oh! i didn’t realize there was a charge for ILL! I haven’t used it in a long time, I don’t remember there being a fee, maybe it was subsidized at the time? i do understand that the shipping can get very expensive.

It’s free most places. Just at a small library and it helps them.

I loved Big Damn Hero! The author did a great job with keeping the characters true to the show, except for a couple of stumbles. I’m looking forward to the next book😁

i was thrilled to hear there’s another book coming! i kinda hope this turns into a never ending tie-in series. i really do need to read this soon.
