New Catherynne Valente “The Folded World”

Posted on: November 1, 2011

Available today is The Folded World, by Catherynne Valente.  Book two in her A Dirge For Prester John series, this volume promises to be a passionately beautiful tale of the beginning of the end of the world.   Through interwoven narratives and creatures that may have never been (or maybe they were?), Valente is a modern master at making places that never were the place you simply need to be.   She’s one of the very few authors whose books I purchase brand new, sight unseen. You can read my review of the first book in the series, The Habitation of the Blessed, here.

not to mention some stunning cover art:

Sorry for the fuzzy photo.

As I said, I bought this “sight unseen”.  so it wasn’t until I got it home and opened the book that I saw this magnificent surprise (which yes, I already mentioned on Twitter, but I am STILL jumping up and down about it):

my first blurb!  And it’s in a Valente book!!!!!    I feel like I just got an Oscar nom for my first movie.

It’s a freaky cover … I like it.

Mark, you should check out this series. I think you’d get a kick out what she’s doing with it.

Congrats on the blurb!!

I just recieved Habitation of the Blessed for my birthday, and I’m completely enthralled with it. I’m so glad the sequel’s already out!

Habitation was my first Valente, and it was love at first read. I wanted to read that entire book out loud! Have you read any of her other books?

How exciting! I’m a bit jealous; I’m still anxiously awaiting my first blurb.

it was a complete and unexpected surprise. I feel very lucky and flattered.

Congrats on that one, Li’l ‘Red! I had a similar experience when I bought the NESFA second volume in their Collected Short Fiction of Poul Anderson and found I had a blurb quote on the back cover. So I know exactly how excited you must feel.

That’s so exciting!

Congrats on your blurb, that is freaking AWESOME. I would be as stoked as you are when you opened the book:))

I’ve never read any Valente, but it looks like I really need to – and congratulations on the fantastic blurb! I haven’t got blurbed yet (to my knowledge!) but if I ever do, I think I’ll probably react exactly the same way. 😛

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
