some new goodies

Posted on: February 26, 2016

here’s  look at some books that have recently (and some not so recently) made their way into my to be read eventually pile. What looks good to you?

.

Goblin Emperor

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison, this is one that everyone has been talking about, so I’m sure i’ll  be reading it sooner rather than later. I dig the cover art, too.

the Chimes

.

The Chimes by Anna Smaill comes out in May, and it’s been getting a ton of  buzz.  here’s the blurb:

After the end of a brutal civil war, London is divided, with slums standing next to a walled city of elites. Monk-like masters are selected for special schooling and shut away for decades, learning to write beautiful compositions for the chimes, played citywide morning and night, to mute memory and keep the citizens trapped in ignorance.
A young orphan named Simon arrives in London with nothing but the vague sense of a half-forgotten promise, to locate someone. What he finds is a new family–a gang of scavengers that patrols the underbelly of the city looking for valuable metal to sell. Drawn in by an enigmatic and charismatic leader, a blind young man named Lucien with a gift for song, Simon forgets entirely what originally brought him to the place he has now made his home.

Spells of blood

.

Spells of Blood and Kin is Claire Humphrey’s debut novel, coming out in June of this year.  Paranormal,  family secrets,  debts to be paid, violence, sounds good so far!

.

Central Station
Lavie Tidhar’s Central Station has also been getting a lot of buzz, but everything he writes gets buzz. I run hot and cold with Tidhar, some of his stuff I really like, and some of it goes completely over my head.  at less than 300 pages, I already like how short this book is. some of the longer books I’ve been trying to get through lately, it’s like “when is this going to end already!”. Well, Central Station comes out in May, and I’m sure I’ll be able to zip through it before then.

Dreams of Dstant

.

I should probably be embarassed that I don’t think I’ve ever read Patricia McKillip?  I’m pretty sure these short stories have been printed before, just never collected.  This collection hits  bookstore shelves in June, and hopefully by then i’ll at least have dipped my toes in.

.

So, what looks good to you?

.

in other news, i’m still slowing reading through The Coldest War by Ian Tregillis. I think my entire review is going to be me picking apart Gretel, and trying to figure out what makes her tick. there’s also some disturbing similarities between her and the Eidolons. Not sure if I want them to never meet, or if I really want them to get to know each other.

I also received a copy of The Chimes and it’s probably the spring book I’m most curious about. I hadn’t heard much about it before, but apparently there are plenty of great reviews from across the pond where it has been out for a while. Looking forward to checking it out!

And I felt the same sheepishness about not having read Patricia McKillip! I finally picked up Kingfisher earlier this month though, and I think you’ll like her writing – it’s fantastic.

Really like the cover on THE CHIMES.

I read The Goblin Emperor in the run up to the Hugo’s last year and it was truly an award worthy novel. Not often I’m sucked in by a fantasy that has more talk than action, but it never lost my interest, what with the court intrigue. I have my fingers crossed she’ll revisit it some day!

I have a copy of The Chimes, too; I plan on reading it in April, and I’m really excited to do so.

Also, I loved The Goblin Emperor. Definitely recommended!

Pretty sure you’ll like Goblin Emperor. Probably one to read right after the next Baru Cormorant book comes out. McKillup is brilliant – The Riddlemaster Trilogy is in my top five for fantasy. I would very much like to read the Tidhar, especially if he is really going all in on SF.

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
