All Hallows Read!

Posted on: October 30, 2014

A few days ago I started reading Let The Right One In, by John Ajvide Lindqvist.  I’ve seen the both the Swedish and American film versions, so I already know the “twist”. But even so, this is a disturbingly creepy book!

Are you reading anything creepy this week?

I am caught in the spell of a fantasy novel at the moment, but I think I’ll reserve tomorrow as a reading day for horror. I have a couple of short story collections perfectly suited for the occasion. And a couple of movies too. 🙂
I really need to correct the situation with “Let the Right One In” too, I’ve seen the movies but I didn’t read the novel yet.

it’s not the kind of book that would usually get my attention, but since seeing the movies I’ve been itching to read it.

I read this a short while ago, it’s very different in a lot of ways from both film versions but that won’t become apparent until you are about half way through. Enjoy!

I’m about a third of the way through, and the biggest change that I’m noticing so far is that in the movie Oskar and the girl are the main characters, and in the book, the girl’s caretaker is a main character. (purposely vague for people who don’t know the premise). Also, the book has a TON more characters.

I’ve only seen the Swedish movie, haven’t yet read the book. I liked the movie, so hopefully will get to it someday! This week I’ve started reading Lauren Beuke’s “Shining Girls”, which is pretty creepy–about a serial killer in a time-travel house.

Like

ooh, I SO want to read Shining Girls! I heard that one and the one she wrote right before it were both just amazing. I’ve read some of Buekes’ earlier stuff, but am woefully behind on her newer novels.

That’s interesting -just posted a review about the same book last week! And yes, I certainly agree regarding creepiness…haven’t seen the movies though, are they worth the time? Best, SPB

I highly recommend the original Swedish movie, I’m pretty sure it’s available through Netflix. the American one is good, but very American.

btw, fantastic review. thank you for no spoilers!

Thank you Andrea, will have a look at it.

I’ve been reading Rebecca, which, while not outright horror (at least– not yet? I’m going to assume nothing actually supernatural appears) definitely has a high creep factor and seemed appropriate for the season.

Great choice for this time of year!

I just finished Christopher Buehlman’s Between Two Fires and am currently reading Fiend by Peter Stenson, an interesting little zombie book 🙂

Like

Nice! I’ve been hearing good things about Fiend.

Oh yeah, awesome book! I read the book first, then just like you, I saw both the American and Swedish movies, and loved them both for different reasons. The book is still one of my favorite horror reads. This week, unfortunately, I’m not reading any creepy horror, but I did just start Endsinger for a blog tour.

at about the halfway point now, and i’m finding so many of the characters to be unsympathetic. Still enjoying myself for sure, but this might be one of those “read once” books for me.

Which version of the film did you like? I preferred the Hammer horror one.

I’m reading the manga, I Am a Hero. Think of it as the Japanese The Walking Dead/28 Days Later.

Like

I really liked the Swedish one with Lina Leandersson as Eli. I liked how understated it was.

That manga sounds cool! I really enjoyed 28 Days Later.

I’m reading a Sherlock Holmes for Halloween, House of Silk.

That book is way, way, way creepier than either movie.

now i’m totally creeped out to read it. thanks a lot!

Looking forward to reading this one – it’s on my list!!!
Currently reading Fevre Dream. I’m all about the vampires at the moment!

oh that is a good one! and you say you’re reading a “George R R Martin horror novel” and people are like “what?”. 😉 There’s a graphic novel of that title floating around too, it’s got fantastic artwork.

I’m actually recording and reading a bunch of creepy stuff for All Hallow’s Read! Some Poe, some Lovecraft and I’m just about to start the Sherlock Holmes story “The Adventure Of The Devil’s Foot.”

Like

I need to read more Poe. I got my hands on some Lovecraft a while back, enjoyed the heck out of it, but man, had some really f-ed up dreams after.

Me and Lovecraft don’t get on that well. Guy has talent but the pay by the word thing REALLY shows in some stories. Ugh

her writing just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?

Unrelated to the holiday, just was finally my turn at the library, but I am listening to Annihilation of the Southern Reach, which I have been told has a horror vibe. .

Like

listening to? How’s the audio version, then?

hmmm…. maybe a little bit of a horror vibe, I got more of a surreal vibe out of it.

I’ve only seen the Swedish film, but if the book is half as creepy as the film, that’s pretty creepy!

Like

so far, and I’m about half way through as of this morning, the book is about 100 times more disturbing/creepy than the movie. Due to time constraints (and other things, I’m sure), they cut a LOT.

the only way to do this book justice would be as a tv miniseries.

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
