Some posts elsewhere, and SciFi November!

Posted on: August 14, 2014

Stuff. I’ve been up to it lately.
.

In the pages of Apex Magazine I interviewed author John Moran about his haunting story “The Sandbirds of Mirelle”
.

And hey, if you’re a subscriber, that issue has an excerpt from Zombies and Calculus, to which i say shut up and take my money.

.
Over at SFSignal I reviewed Wolfsbane, the third book in Gillian Philip’s fantastically fun (and addictive!) Rebel Angels series.
.

I made pickled daikon radish. They were crunchy and delicious,  but omg, that stench. It could srsly knock a person down.

Yesterday I picked my first ripe tomato off my tomato plant. There is tomato basil cheesy bread in my future! Tomatoes are late this year because my plant didn’t get enough sun.

I finished reading Cibola Burn by James S.A. Corey and the Kaleidoscope anthology edited by Alisa Krasnostein and Julia Ross. Hoping to have time to work on reviews this weekend.
.

And I signed up for SciFi November!  Last year the fabulous Rinn of Rinn Reads organized the massive insanity known a SciFi November. This year, because she values her sanity, she recruited the ladies from Oh The Books! to help run the shindig. So, yeah, you should go over there and check it out. And sign up to do cool stuff. Because, like, it’s fun. and cool.

I’m doing sci fi november as well. Not sure what I’m actually DOING, but I’m kind of glad November is a ways away:-) Kaleidoscope looks awesome, hope you enjoy it!

You finished Cibola Burn? Good for you! I’ve still only read the first one. I just (finally) started reading Christopher Paolini’s The Inheritance Cycle. I’d read Eragon when it came out in 2002 but decided to wait for the other books, which took nine years. Then of course they had to sit on the shelf for a while. I’m about done re-reading the first book so I can move on with the rest. The other series I was going to try to get to this Summer is The Expanse.

How is the Inheritance Cycle? When you finish them, let me know what you think.

Expanse is excellent. First book is all set up, books 2 and 3 are fantastic, and book 4 kinda starts a whole new plot line. they’re big fat doorstopper books, but surprisingly fast reads.

Fun AND cool? I might just have to sign myself up for that.

Nothing like fresh tomatoes. Are you making a focaccia or making something more like a toasted cheese bread?

Like

more like a toasted cheese bread. sliced tomato and shredded mozzarella on bread, then into the toaster oven for maybe 2 minutes. it tasted SO GOOD!

Oh, that sounds wonderful!

*stares at the home-grown tomato on her counter*

I was thinking of just eating it w/ a little salt, but now I’m torn.

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
