book buying probation

Posted on: July 27, 2013

I have returned from California! sleep has been had, coffee has been drunk, contact lenses have been replaced and hair has been washed.  now I just need to check with HR and see if I can take all of next week as vacation.

note to self:  do not take the red-eye next time. it’s just not worth it.  who would have thought that a Sacramento to Minneapolis red-eye would have been overbooked? is that flight really this popular? the big guy sitting next to me fell asleep on my shoulder (not cool), but I got to watch a thunderstorm from the sky (super cool).

While I was gone, an obscene quantity of books showed up at home.  Husband nearly flipped out as the stacks grew. He says I’m on book buying probation until I cull some of my collection.  I really can’t argue with him. Warning: photo dump starts. . .  NOW.

my shipment from Borderlands Books:

The Weird, edited by Ann and Jeff Vandermeer

Makers by Cory Doctorow

The Privilege of the Sword by Ellen Kushner

Declare by Tim Powers

Edge by Thomas Blackthorne

Fearsome Journeys, edited by Jonathan Strahan

I’d never heard of Thomas Blackthorne before, but how can you say no to this minimalist yet  effective cover art?

SAM_3415

these showed up too:

SAM_3416

Emperor of Thorns by Mark Lawrence

The Black Fire Concerto by Mike Allen

Clarkesworld Year Four all the fiction from year four of Clarkesworld Magazine. Clarkesworld is teh awesomesauce.

there’s more.

Orbit, who enjoys spoiling me rotten, sent me:

SAM_3417

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, which I’ve never heard of, but it looks hella  cool.

The Crown Tower by Michael Sullivan. Everyone who reads this series loves it,  and now I’ve got a copy staring at me, whispering “readme.  readme. readme”.

we’re not done quite yet.  I didn’t want my adorable husband to have a stroke, so I didn’t tell him what was hidden on the kindle.  on that magical machine is The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch, The Incrementalists by Steven Brust and  Skyler White  and The Winds of Khalakovo by Bradley P. Beaulieu.

I also haven’t told him there’s some on the way from Apex Publications. but it’s little, I swear!

I’ve got a few chapters left in Blackout by Mira Grant (finishing it at the airport the other night simply wasn’t going to happen).

I love all books equally, but anyone who follows this blog or gets e-mails from me knows which book I’m picking up next.

wow! I’m a little bit like that myself! I have like 10 books to read and I know that even though I have those books to read I’m still going to find more books that I want!

and I know I”m going to visit the local bookstore to visit with my friends who work there. . . and I’ll end up buying some stuff and ordering some more stuff! My family just needs to understand that there is no escape from my book obsession!

How do you get through reading so many books?!? Do you just close yourself off from society?!? I find with friends family college etc. I’d be lucky to get an hour to read everyday!

When I’m on-call at work, I just sit around reading and waiting for my phone to ring. doesn’t hurt that I’m a total introvert as well! 😉

Oh I read the second book in that Thomas Blackthorne series. I remember feeling very meh about it, but the cover design is great. (Even better on the second one).

Like

is the first Blackthorne book any good? The guy at the bookstore highly recommended it.

Like

I actually only read the second book. The publisher offered me an ARC, and I accepted before realizing it was the second in a series.

Oh, these look good! I have THE WEIRD on my shelf, but haven’t gotten it down and started it yet. I hear you on needing to cull a bit before you buy again – don’t tell anyone, but I bought another Kindle daily deal today anyway! *le sigh*

Happy reading!

The Weird is intimidating until you crack it open to find the majority of the stories are only a few pages long. Looks like one of those books you can just open it at random and find a gem! Although I learned the hard way that you shouldn’t read the HP Lovecraft when it’s dark outside. Or the Kafka.

those kindle deals are dangerous! they’re cheap, so it’s easy to buy too much!

I have a tiny notion what book you’re going to pick up next!! Great haul! I seriously need to get rid of some books, in fact to be honest, I think for the first time in my life ever I actually agree that I have too many stacks! I’ve realised I have a problem – I can’t stop acquiring new books – seriously I need help!! But, I suppose recognition is the first step.

And i started that particular book the other night, and have been in book heaven ever since!

yes, recognition is the first step. the 2nd step is hiding the offending books under your bed so you can buy more. 😉

Heck yes, to that very last part. Although I confess, I let myself be talked (not very hard!) into taking part in a community readalong of the Locke Lamora books over at Fantasy Faction, starting next month. Oh, the torment… Only question is, can I make each book last a month?*

* Ha. Ha ha. No.

Lol, NO. me thinks a lot of folks over at FF are going to realize those books are unputdownable!

I know! I know! I know which book you are going to read first! 😉

Go tea party on his butt and protest the implementation of his anti-capitalist regulation. Book buying probations are bad for business and job creation. Boycott book buying probations. Okay, I’m totally joking because we have the exact same problem in my house, but my probations are usually self regulated. My husband just rolls his eyes at my book stacks but (usually) has the sense to keep his comments to himself.

I actually thought about putting myself on a probation this morning after I did a cursory count of book purchases made last year…There’s simply no way that I will ever read all of the books but I still bought them. The count? 220 books in 2012. This year I’ve already purchased 68. You would think that my house would be over flowing, however all of those purchases are on my Kindle….

Heh…. I got all of those as well. My husband has had me on book buying probation for about a year. It doesn’t work. I get books anyway. It’s an addiction. I have a problem.

and the first step is knowing we have a problem.

and the second step is buying more books!

Fortunately for me, shelf reorganization while the wife and kids were away means that nobody knows quite how many volumes I acquired at the Half Price Books warehouse sale. There might be repercussions otherwise..
Winds of Khalakovo is very good. It comes with my hearty recommendation. (Review to follow once family kicks jet lag and starts sleeping before midnight again.)

Yeah I’ve pretty much been on book buying probation for years but I don’t listen – I want, I must have, mine mine mine! Plus – now that books show up constantly from publishers, my hubs knows I buy way less books…and when I do buy books he doesn’t notice them in the slew of publisher sent books. So I don’t have to smuggle them into the house anymore.

I LOVE that Blackthorne cover! I hope to be loved by Orbit one day…since I love them oh so much ….ahhh unrequited love so painful no? LOL

I love looking at other people’s book shelves. Voyeuristic? Is it book porn? Even if it is, I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Great book haul. Curious to see what you think of the Mark Lawrence books.

Best of luck with the probation. Its like trying to hold back the whirlwind! 🙂

I need to pick up the latest Clarkesworld book. And I really want Ancillary Justice purely for the John Harris cover. I hope the book lives up to the image.

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
