What did you do this weekend?

Posted on: May 5, 2013

Not a lot of reading got done this weekend.

Cuz I was busy making this:

Cinnamon Raisin Bread!

Cinnamon Raisin Bread!

And apparently the secret is rising the dough overnight in the fridge, and not using an entire egg and tons of butter in the cinnamon sugar mix. Blend the softened butter into the bread dough and then when you’re making the filling use just enough egg to dissolve the cinnamon sugar in.

also, this:

Lemon tart!

Lemon tart!

Note to self: next time you make the lemon tart filling,  beat the eggs before adding sugar  and lemon juice and zest. Otherwise you get those weird unmixed white bits. They still tasty delish, just look funny.

I ended up w/a  ton of unused egg whites.  mmmm…. egg white omelet for me!

meanwhile, I’m busy reading The Spirit Rebellion by Rachel Aaaron and Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon by Spider Robinson. Gotta be mixing my sf with my f, know what I mean? 😉  And in the meantime, I’m percolating a review of Melanie Rawn’s The Diviner. Although I could easily just say “omg, it was awesome!” over and over again until I hit 500 words.

So, what did you do this weekend?

Looks good, both of them, but especially the cinnamon bread, which I love! I was just reading all the rave reviews on the King Arthur Flour Web site about their cinnamon mix for breads, rolls, etc. and developed a strong craving for cinnamon bread.

I’m always so tempted by their mixes! Everytime the catalog shows up in the mail I just drool over everything! But you don’t really need a mix for Cinnamon raisin bread, you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry. the best (and easiest) recipes I’ve found for it are on the Martha Stewart website and in The Bread Bible.

Love your baking expeditions. I haven’t read Melanie Rawn since early college – and yes, her stuff is awesome. Looking forward to your review.

Great question 😉 Friday after work, I came home and worked around the house. My hubby and I moved last weekend so there’s LOTS to do! Saturday I gave the SAT test at a high school and attended a friend’s book launch that evening. Today I shopped with my hubby and ate ice cream. Now I’m catching up on emails and reading “Sweet Peril” by Wendy Higgins. It’s sooo good!
Your desserts look yummy! I love to bake but I suck at it!

I can do breads and pastry stuff OK, but cakes and cupcakes and stuff like that I am teh suck at.

Book launches are always fun! a wonderful change of pace from the packing packing packing and then the unpacking unpacking unpacking. I do not envy you the work of moving. You deserve the ice cream and enjoying a good book!

Those both look really yummy.

Look forward to your thoughts on the Spider Robinson book. I’ve always wanted to read it because of the cover art.

I went to see Iron Man 3 on Friday night, went to Farmer’s Market and grocery store on Saturday and made a nice meal Sat. night and watched The Awakening on Netflix.

Sunday was church with a little Skyrim in between, some blogging, and some planning for our upcoming vacation.

All in all a good weekend despite not getting any real reading done.

How was Iron Man???

Our farmers market opened this weekend too, but it’s always a madhouse party the first weekend so we’re going to wait till next Saturday.

I started the Spider Robinson, it’s good! very casual. More like chatting over a beer with a buddy than reading a book.

What did I do for my weekend? Seriously? You’re asking me this on a Monday? How am I s’posed to remember what I did for the weekend on a Monday? Lol. What you did sounds fun. A bit of therapeutic cooking and some reading. Sounds like it was relaxing. And I love the sound of that review you’re whipping up. Sometimes ‘OMG, it as awesome’ just says it all. 😉

the baking was so therapeutic, the bread especially! nothing is better to undo a lot of stress than the smell of bread in the oven.

but uggg, now I’m realizing the folly of my ways. i didn’t do any laundry over the weekend!

Those look yummy! I too did some baking experimenting with different types of flour and fruit for some really awesome pies and tarts. I also got some books from the library and started on them. I love reading and baking weekends! 🙂

These look great. I don’t do a lot of baking – just every now and again when I get it on me.
You could have used your egg whites to make meringues – then you could have had Eton Mess! Or you could have whisked them up and made chocolate mousse! Course, it’s a bit late for that particular advice now!

I DID: read (HAMMETT UNWRITTEN), work in the garden, go to a plant sale, work in the garden some more, read some more (THE HONEY THIEF), walked by the river (2 miles), work on a jigsaw puzzle, read blogs, had dinner with friends (I grilled steaks, my wife made salad). I DID NOT: bake anything at all. Nothing. I didn’t even make a cookie. Darn. The stuff you did looks great.

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
