Even more new stuff

Posted on: May 4, 2013

I don’t think I can afford to buy any more books until the end of the summer!  Also, reviews have been light recently because I’m up to my eyeballs in epic The Diviner, by Melanie Rawn. ignore it’s hokey cover art, and go read this right now because it is amazing.  Review will show up eventually, I’ve got to finish it first!

but, there’s New Stuff!

SAM_2703A Stranger in Olondria was recommended to me by my friend at the bookseller. The debut novel from Sofia Samatar from Small Beer Press, it never hurts to support new authors and small presses. the cover art? eh, bleh.

River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay – after a long discussion with the other half last night about how Kay’s writing has evolved over the years, we decided that even though neither of us were in love with Under Heaven, we should give the pseudo-sequel, River of Stars a try.

New to me stuff! (because I can’t resist a used bookstore!)

Yes, I know the Doctor Who novelizations are kinda hokey. BUT I DON”T CARE I LOVE THEM!

Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding – I remember hearing a ton about this when it came out, time to give it a shot.

Kushiel’s Dart by Jaqueline Carey. When 99% of the blogging world is saying this book is a must read, who am I to pass on it?

Ooo, I hope you enjoy Retribution Falls. 😀 I’m still waiting for the next (last?) book in that series. Good fun, they are.

Two of my favorite authors of all time made on to this post! I think you will love the intricacy of Kushiel’s Dart. I haven’t read Guy Gavriel Kay’s latest yet, but it is on the short list.

I was tempted to tag you in the post, as soon as i saw the book I was like “Susan keeps tell me I got to read this!”. Lots of bookstores had later books in the series, but finding the first book proved a challenge.

I know – I wear my copy out or lend it out every few years and have to replace it. Worthy book.

I think you’ll find the Sea Devils an interesting read. I just finished listening to the audio version of it a few weeks ago.

Most of Malcolm Hulke’s tie-in Who novels are good.

where are the audios available at? It’s a short book, about how long was the audio?

Retribution Falls I actually picked up from the library but had to take it back before I could read it – as there was somebody else waiting for it. I’ll wait and see what you make of it. I’m a bit of a nutter with the library – I reserve things thinking they’ll all come in at different times and then they all come in at once and I end up with 7/8 books to read in one go! I think I’ve read a few things about Kushiel’s Dart that make me want to pick it up – but aren’t there quite a lot of books in this series??

One of these days I need to get to Retribution Falls. I’ve had it and the sequel on the shelves since buying them in the Borders closing sale.

I want to read River of Stars based solely on The Coode Street podcasts discussing it.

You are correct, that is one lame cover for the Rawn book. Looks like Orlando Bloom with a bad wig on.

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
