Friday Fun, Finally!!

I haven’t done a Friday Fun post in what feels like ages, so I know, let’s do one!
I’ve got a “to be read” pile that’s nearly reaching the ceiling, I finished Lavie Tidhar’s Osama last night and haven’t even started a review yet, am torn between three books I want to start and I’ve got two other books on hold at the library. Yup, definitely time for a Friday Fun / random stuff / link soup post.
speaking of reading piles, what are you reading right now, and what have you got on deck?
Are you looking forward to the Prometheus Alien movie? Think it will rock? Worried you’ll be walking out of the theatre saying “Way to wreck the franchise, Bakula”? see the trailer here.

Seems like everyone who is anyone is reading Saladin Ahmed’s Throne of the Crescent Moon. I’m getting my copy tomorrow. I’m usually turned off by anything that gets hyped or over-hyped, but not this time. Maybe it’s because I’ve met Ahmed and he’s one of the nicest, most modest guys around (not to mention insanely well read, intelligent and a fellow Michigander). But anyways, what are your thoughts on titles that are hyped / overhyped? First titles that come to my mind are Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and the Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Are books that are superhyped bound to be disappointing to us book snobs? or am I just an epic book snob?
I’m a cavewoman and just discovered pod casting. what reasonably priced ipod/mp3 player should I buy for use on long work commutes? I’m also thinking 40 minute yoga sessions will be much less boring if I’m listening to some sweet audio.
and randomly speaking of fun Michigan stuff, I’ll be at the Marmalade Dog gaming con next weekend. Hoping to run at least one game of Ticket to Ride:Europe on Saturday morning, possibly Game of Thrones as well, while secretly hoping to get in on a game or two of Small World or Railways. are you a board gamer geek? what are your faves?

Ready Player One and The Night Circus were good, though… 🙂
I have not actually seen mention of Throne of the Crescent Moon. I will have to a) check into the blogs that you read because I am apparently missing out and b) go look the book up to see if I am interested.

It really does depend on the book. I’ve read hyped things (Lies immediately springs to mind) and thought OMG! This is the best thing ever! I can see what everyone was talking about. Conversely I’ve read hyped books, not naming anything here, and come away thinking Really? Everyone thinks we should read this why? On topic I am looking forward to Throne of the Crescent Moon, whenever I happen to see a copy down here, not just because of the hype and because of the respect Saladin (what a cool name!) Ahmed already has within the genre, but because it’s Arabian Nights, and that will ALWAYS get me in. I’ve read the prologue online and hey it looks good, the chances are if it can hook me that early then I’m probably going to like unless it all goes pear shaped later on.
To Eric: Ready Player One was totally awesome. It was one of my top 5 for last year, probably just edged out for debut of the year by Douglas Hulick’s Among Thieves. It does help if you’re into 80’s pop culture, though, and I am an 80’s child, so it hit me right where I live.

I’m really looking forward to the Prometheus movie – plus lots of others! Hobbit not the least. And, I seem to be all over the place with my reading – I think my pile is becoming a bit daunting is why and it’s putting me in a spin. Reading Pure at the moment, plus 2nd book in Game of Thrones, plus Second Foundation, plus The Hobbit! And, I’m waiting to read Among Thieves, Heroes and Third Section. All good though and I’m enjoying them all.

I’m with Kailana! I thought The Night Circus was excellent. Not overhyped, just hyped with the wrong language to the wrong sorts of readers, who were led to expect something it’s not.
I’ve heard such good things about Ahmed–he’s in the TBR pile, but after I saw NK Jemisin read last week, he’s going to have to wait in line (she’s so amazing in person, so I can’t wait to read The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms).
On deck right now for me, still trucking through The Windup Girl (Paolo Bacigalupi) in between things for work. Next up should be Kevin Hearne’s Hounded.

I read Hounded just recently and loved it – picked up and read Hexed almost immediately after and now got Hammered just sat looking at me! I love Atticus and Oberon.

I’m looking forward to Prometheus. The nice thing about it being a prequel of sorts is that if it sucks it won’t really wreck the other films because you can just ignore it. Same as many people do with the prequel Star Wars films.

Most overhyped disappointment of the last year? Easy. Robopocalypse. Predictable, repetitive, and unsatisfying.
I’m a little leery of Ready Player One (pseudo-genre books hyped outside the genre usually fail to satisfy) so I don’t know if I’m going to go there. I’ll probably investigate the BSFA shortlist next.
