Announcing the Lies of Locke Lamora read along

Posted on: February 6, 2012

These are a few of my favorite things!

Ladies and Gentlemen,  this is what you’ve been waiting for. This is the “February surprise”.

This is what all the fuss is about.

This spring, I invite you to join Dark Cargo, My Awful Reviews, @OhthatAshley posting at SF Signal, and Dark Cargo Explorer and Yours Truly on an epic journey through the elderglass towers, the corrupt marketplaces, the shark infested waters beneath the pirate ship fortresses, and the thief prowling alleys and bridges of Camorr. I invite you to join us on what could be the reading experience of your life. I invite you to join us on our read along of Scott Lynch’s debut novel The Lies of Locke Lamora, the unassuming looking fantasy novel that started cults, inspired restraining order style behavior, and quite possibly changed everyone’s ideas of dark fantasy and antiheroes.  Don’t worry, we’ll be reading Red Seas Under Red Skies as well.  Can’t have a summer without pirates, now can we?

If you’ve never read Scott Lynch’s Gentlemen Bastards sequence which starts with The Lies of Locke Lamora and continues in Red Seas Under Red Skies, this is your opportunity.  If you’ve read one or both books before, the timing couldn’t be better for a re-read, as this whole thing is in preparation for the Republic of Thieves, due to hit bookstore shelves later this year. Yes! This year! Really!  Scott Lynch said so!

How to join in, you ask?

It’s easy.   all you have to do is reply to this thread* (or to any of the other participating bloggers) . I’ll add you to my super secret e-mail mailing list, and you’ll get an e-mail with discussion starters for each section of the book. Post your responses to your blog, and poof, the awesomeness has begun!

A few other little details everyone should be aware of:

Detail the first: We’ll be getting started with The Lies of Locke Lamora the first week of March and Red Seas Under Red Skies sometime in mid to late April (which should give everyone a chance to get copies), and we’ll read 120 – 160 pages per week, with discussions going up on the weekends. Paperbacks tend to run less than $10, electronic probably a bit less, audio probably a bit more, limited editions from Subterranean Press considerably more so.  Any version is fine. Chapter breaks and other timing info to be posted later this month.

Detail the second: These are some of my favorite books, by one of my most favorite authors. You can expect much fan girlishness from me. What I said before about restraining order behavior? uh, yeah, that was me.  Here’s hoping all the other bloggers will be much more mature and professional.

Detail the third:  These books are rated super R for casual violence, violence towards children, promotion of flexible morals,  massive amounts of glamorized criminal activity, occasional drug and alcohol use, a smidgen of bought and paid for sex, and oh gods, the swear words. So many deliciously magnificent naughty words! If you wouldn’t use the word delicious or magnificent to describe creative invective, and if you are at all offended by anything else listed above, this may not be the read al0ng for you.  Really. I’m not kidding. Don’t even ask me if this would be appropriate for your fourteen year old kid.

and with that, which of you bastards is on board for this fucking thing?

.

Lies of Locke Lamora has been on my TBR list for quite some time now so I’d like to join this read along (and make sure I actually read the book) but I don’t have a wordpress account just a blogger one.
So, I guess I’ll be sending you an email. 🙂

Like

Ines, don’t worry, I can get your e-mail from your comment. but you can still e-mail me if you’d like to! 😀

Forgot to ask.
Should we add a couple of beers for the read along? 😉
(I usually have a glass of something close by when reading in any case)

I missed the book club read last year and it’s been sitting on my to reads for a while now. Looking forward to participate.

Count me in! Oh wait, I’m one of the other hosts. Well, that still counts, right? 🙂

I’ve heard nothing but good things about this book- been on the list for a while. I’m in, please and thank you!

Like

I’m in. Lies is one of my all time favourite books, I may as well read it for about the 6th time. I was planning to do this at some stage in preparation for Republic in any case.

Like

I’m in! I’ve been meaning to read this one for way too long.

Like

I have heard nothing, but great things about Scott Lynch. This gives me a great excuse to FINALLY read these 2 book by him..:) His writing sounds quite interesting.

Like

Sounds like a great excuse to re-read them. And I’ll even be able to get hold of my copies before the start

Like

This sounds like fun 🙂 I haven’t ready any Scott Lynch but the books are on my radar to read at some point.

Like

I’m so happy to have everyone on board! Lies and Red Seas are sitting on my coffee table staring at me. . . I’m having trouble not starting Lies right now.

Like

Sign me up. Both books are on my Kindle Fire waiting to start. Now I need to finish “The Blade Itself” first.

I’m really looking forward to this group re-read!

This should be fun and plus it’ll jog my memory before the next book comes out! Count me in please.
Thanks

Count me in 😀 As I was telling you over at Amy’s blog, I’m more likely to join the final discussion than the weekly ones, but it still sounds like a ton of fun. Thanks for hosting!

I would also very much like to join. For anyone who was considering checking this out as an audiobook, the reader is superb. It’s almost better to listen to it.

Like

I have heard very good things about the audio book. I really need to just breakdown and buy it, especially since I’m on the road so much for work. And so many scenes, I can already imagine how much more intense they would be as audio instead of reading!

Well my blog focusses on Asian films and anime but I can stretch to some cool fantasy. Can I sign up?

I’m really contemplating signing up for this…I have the book on my shelf waiting to be read and have been dying to for ages because my friend loved it….however I already have so much to read 😥 If I can clear some of my TBR in time then you can count me in…. 120/160 pages a week should be do-able right? 🙂 Is there a deadline for when I need to sign up?

Like

I just added your name to the list. . . . if you can participate, awesome, if not, no worries. If you feel like you’re getting too many e-mails from me let me know and I’ll take you off the list.

Like

I’m in! Don’t expect any level of professionalism from me through! 😛

Like

I really would love to participate, and I may still try to do it, but I have several deadlines that make it really hard to justify reading anything but the books I’m due to review. I wouldn’t care so much if it was just for my own site, but it’s paid work, so… I have to give it priority.

I’ll still try to drop by and, if the workload clears up, I’ll read along. I loved this novel and its sequel, the first time I read it.

Like

These two books have been on my tbr list for quite some time. I have a tumblr account but I would love to join in too! I look forward to your email.

Sounds fun I’ll join in.

Someone gave me this book for Christmas and this will be the perfect spur to get me to read it. Sign me up!

Like

Okay, I thought about it and decided to join in. I think I will go like Nymeth, though, and just join in for the end. Looking forward to FINALLY reading this book!

Like

Ditto what everyone else said about this book and tbr. But I suck at doing things. So consider me tentatively in.

Like

I’m very interested, I have the paperback on order, I could give it a try. My concern is that I’m in the middle of three other books right now, one is a review with a deadline, plus I’m pretty tied up with a non-book project, AND I’m not sure I have 120-160 pages (especially the latter) in me at this point. I’d hate to fall behind, drop out or be a non-participant. Plus I already have an every Friday (Forgotten Books) and an every Monday (New Arrivals) post locked into the schedule. So, darn it, I just don’t know. Maybe you can help me decide. Would my 14 year old like it? He a cat. Does it have talking cats in it?

Okay, I’m kidding about that last part. It’s just that the timing couldn’t be worse for me right now. If I’d acted on this when you first posted it, I could have a chunk of the book already read, instead of getting underway in this half-assed manor.

Like

Richard, you can play catch up at the end if you want, read the book during the last two weeks and just participate in those discussions if that works better for you. Or start the book and see how it goes, and read and finish on your own schedule.

appropriate for a teenager? well, no talking cats, no cats at all until the 2nd book, and they don’t talk. and wow, lots and lots and lots of swear words, quite a bit of violence, and lots of thievery. If this was a CD, it would be covered in parental advisory stickers. So read the first chapter or two and decide if it’s something your teen would be interested in.

Like

I knew it wasn’t appropriate, I DID read your write-up, so I was just pulling your chain a little bit. I’ll see, the book is “in the mail” right now, don’t know when it might show. Plus the truck has to get up our icy hill (more snow and hail today! Yippee!) to bring it. That might be a pun. Hmmm. I really don’t give a damn about no fucking swear words, so that’s not a problem, is it. The question may be how to deal with the guilt of moving this book, not even here yet to the top of the TBR list, when so many others have waited so patiently… So I’ll just pop in as I can, how’s that? Damn, your enthusiasm is infectious.

Like

oh good that it’s the enthusiasm that’s infectious, for a minute there I thought it was this Martian fungus. 😉

I did have someone innocently ask me once if Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy was appropriate for her fourteen year old. ummm, NO!!

i feel your pain about moving things up to the top of the TBR stack when others have been waiting so patiently. The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers and Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks have been patiently sitting in my stack since last summer.

Like

well, no talking cats, no cats at all until the 2nd book, and they don’t talk

No, but it’s a cool cat all the same.

Finally got around to making sure my library had these books. I’M TOTALLY IN! And just in time too.

I’m going to join in, but only for Red Seas Under Red Skies. I just read Lies early last year, and that’s too soon to re-read for me.

That said, I’ll certainly be following along and keeping up with what everyone thinks.

is it OK if I add you to the mailing list for both? you can just ignore the e-mails until we get to Red Seas?

Absolutely. In fact, I was hoping you would.

Hiya! I’ve read this one last year (became one of the best audiobooks of 2011), so I won’t join now, but count me in for the Red Seas Under Red Skies.

Hiya, thanks for the comment on our Red Seas Under Red Skies post! I would be glad to join your read along – even though I won’t read along, but I’d be happy to follow up the discussions and participate if I can. Let me know what should happen from there… I’ve never done this before!

Hello! A monkey-barrelful of apologies for being so slow, but would it be possible to join in late? I can spy the first discussion questions from Booky Pony (she talked me into this, the devious bastard), so no need to send them to me, but if you could add me to your mailing list so I can join in on the fun, that’d be, yes, that’d be great!

Hi Kay, there is no such thing as “late” or “slow”, so don’t worry. I’ve added you to the list, so you should start getting one e-mail from me near the end of each week. Welcome to the party! 😀

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
