New Arrivals makes me teh happy

Posted on: September 12, 2011

As usual, it’s been a wonderfully book-y couple of weeks. Thanks to Quercus books and PYR I got some much anticipated ARCs:

I feel privileged to have  gotten an ARC of Mazarkis Williams’ The Emperor’s Knife, it looks incredible.  Epic fantasy, but not as we know it (or at least, not exactly).  Tattoos that take over your mind as they take over your body, intricate games, battles of the mind. . .   this baby just got jumped to the top of the TBR list. 2011 has been a year of incredible epic fantasy for me, and so much of what I’ve read has been the first or second book in a series, with the next book expected sometime in 2012/2013.   I love that every year it just gets better and better!!

Mike Resnick’s The Doctor and the Kid is the sequel to last year’s The Buntline Special. A wild wild west full of steampunk inventions and Native American magic, it’s not the deepest thing you’ll ever read, but it was a helluva lot of fun.  Westerns typically haven’t been my thing, but Resnick’s Doc Holliday rocked my world.

My fave local family owned bookstore wooed me with “we got in a whole ton of classic SF, come on by and take a look”. Good thing I left my debit card at home, otherwise I would have bought a car payment’s worth of classic SF. I managed to walk outta there with just these two:

confession time: I’ve never read any Andre Norton.  How sad is that?  they had about 20 titles, and of course I had no idea which to choose, but Uncharted Stars said something about a cat and had hella cool cover art.   Did I choose well? What other Norton titles should I keep my eye out for?

And of course, the Doctor Who.  I just couldn’t resist.  The bookstore got in about 50 classic Doctor Who’s, and again, I had no idea which one to choose, so picked Doctor Who and The Masque of Mandragora. It had cool cover art. But alas, no kitty.  I wish I’d had more cash on me that day, I would have bought a stack.

I’m working on finishing The Bible Repairman and Other Stories, by Tim Powers (did you really think I could resist a book with that title?), but it’s difficult to finish, because I keep getting distracted by all these other titles on my bookshelf that I want to read!!  the best part about loving books is also the worst part: Choosing what to read next is painful because I want to read them all.

and of course, you all wanted to see photos of the butt ugly carpeting in my apartment!

Uncharted Stars was one of my favorite Andre Norton books in high school, although you should know it’s the sequel to a book called The Zero Stone.

yay, I chose well! but aww crap, it’s a sequel. Can I read it as a stand alone?

I am in the same boat you are, I’ve never read any of Andre Norton’s work. I felt bad when she passed away back in 2005 and I hadn’t read anything and now six years later I still haven’t. Where does the time go?

Looks like you got a fun haul. With The Way of Kings and The Name of the Wind and now the Tolkien re-read (for me) this is the most epic fantasy I think I’ve read in a year ever before. And it has been really good. I’m excited for you that your latest ARC doesn’t sound anything like what we’ve been reading. I think it has the potential for being more interesting for you if it doesn’t feel like a copy of some other kind of epic fantasy.

As for the Resnick, sometimes ‘helluva lot of fun’ is the best thing to be reading. I’m enjoying Storm Front for that very same reason.

Feels better to know I’m not the only one who has never read her. Even if I haven’t read Uncharted Stars by the time I get back to the bookstore, I’ll probably pick up another Norton. I rarely see a stack of Norton’s at a bookstore, and they were in very good condition.

if someone had told me two years ago that i’d become such a huge fantasy fan, I’d have laughed in their face.

Sounds great! The Emperor’s Knife I’ve just read a review for, and I’m really looking forward to it. Haven’t read any of the steampunk series, but as I love steampunk… 😉

The Resnick is kinda steampunk-lite, but I think you might like it!

The Masque of Mandragora…that brings back some memories. not only was it the 1st Dr Who novelisation I read, it was also one of the first serials I can truly remember watching. I’m stilll going through my greatly increased TBR pile after Worldcon.

It’s a pretty skinny book, I wonder if it’s just part of the serial or the whole thing?

I’m hoping to get to WorldCon next year, I hope(?) my TBR pile will get all exploded. 😉

I need to split myself into seven pieces so I can read seven books at the same time. . . .

I don’t read a lot of fantasy by The Emperor’s Knife sounds good. Looking forward to your thoughts.

I’m hoping it’s as good as it looks. I heard about it thru a reputable source as well, so I’ve got doubly high hopes.

Andre Norton’s classic fantasy series would be the “Witchworld” novels. I got into SF as a kid reading just about everything she had out by then (late Sixties). Favorites were, and still are: “Star Rangers” (aka “The Last Planet”) and “Galactic Derelict” (second in the “Time Agent” series but stands alone) as well as “The Stars Are Ours” and its sequel “Star Born”. Her later work didn’t do as much for me but that says more about me than Andre Norton.

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
