Dune read along starting July 1st!

It’s a classic! You know you want to! Or you are least curious to see what spawned a weird Lynch movie, two scifi channel miniseries, and at least one board game (and yes, I’ve seen and played them).
Check out the post that started it all over at Stainless Steel Droppings. Carl of Stainless Steel, Kailana of The Written World and myself will be each be hosting discussions for a different part of the novel. I’ll be hosting the 2nd portion, which will be the 2nd week of July, and of course I’ll be posting links to their discussions as well.
so mark your calendar for this friday, July 1st, brush off your copy of Dune, be it original cover art, your movie tie-in edition, your 40th anniversary special edition, be it well loved or barely cracked open. . . and remember to walk without rhythm!

full disclosure: Dune is a long time favorite of mine. I read it for the first time when I was about 15, and it was a game changer for me. by the time I was 19, I’d read the entire series of six, and even sort of understood the last 2 books! if it has something to do with this series, i’ve probably read it, seen it, listened to it, or played it. I iz a dune-head. Even more geekiness: when my other half and I got our first apartment and blended our book collections, we found we had 3-4 copies of each book in the series.
additional full disclosure: I’ve read the first Herbert/Anderson “prequel” – it struck me as an okay book, but not very Dune-ish. I do not consider the “prequels” to be Canon.

Great post. I am beyond thrilled that we are doing this together. Not only is it finally getting me off my duff in terms of reading this classic, but it will be fun knowing I have people to discuss it with–people who haven’t read it before, like me, and others who love it like you do.

Weird Lynch movie? Isn’t that redundant?
At my reading rate, I don’t know if I’d be able to keep up with a re-read of Dune. I read it on summer vacation when I was 15 or 16, so I could log some serious read time.
Maybe I’ll just jam-out to To Tame a Land by Iron Maiden as i read the discussions.

only a little redundant, Dune is probably Lynch’s most coherent film! 😉

Don’t forget that there are five computer games in the Dune franchise as well! They’re of varying quality, but I have to say I’m very attached to the original game.
I’ve always enjoyed Dune and even decided to do an analysis on Frank Herbert’s writing style for an English class once. I’ve got a number of other books that I need to read so I won’t be able to participate, but I might try and read Dune Messiah, as it’s much shorter.

JourneymanGM – I’ve seen a bunch of those games, but i’ve only played the pc version of the late 70’s board game. I like the board game version better, and it’s a great game except for the teensy weensy counters. if you have time, stop in during the Dune read, and later would love to hear your thoughts on Messiah!

I will get in on this. I tried reading the book about 4 years ago but just couldn’t get into it. I think I should give it another go. Plus, I appear to have almost finished Assassin’s Apprentice for the July Fantasy Faction read.

Kindle price is a little high – $13 for a 40 year old book! May have to pick up a second hand paperback and play catch up after a week. Can’t wait to read it!

you can probably get a 2nd hand copy for $5 or less. brand new printing from Barnes & Noble will probably run maybe $8-$9?

no worries. I’m pretty sure I picked up Whipping Star like 10 years ago, and got distracted, and I think did the same with Dosadi. I’ve heard those ones are beyond bizarre.
