Hugos, Go Buy a Book, and Grilled Pizza

Posted on: September 3, 2012

This has been one helluvan exciting weekend, no?  Hugo awards announced at WorldCon in Chicago, fan community uproar when the streaming service cut the feed due to copyright infringement (showing clips of the winning TV episode? oh the horror!!), the livetweeting awesomeness that followed, and the highlight of my weekend, the grilled pizza cookoff.

Also, this Friday, Sept 7th is National Buy a Book day, so you should totally go buy something. I dunno, maybe one of these snazzy novels, perhaps the bolded one that JUST WON A HUGO AWARD for best novel!

Among Others by Jo Walton
A Dance With Dragonsby George R. R. Martin
Deadline by Mira Grant
Embassytown by China Miéville
Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey

And by the way, click here for a list of all the nominees and winners. A personal congratulations to Jim C. Hines for winning best fan writer. That dude is an all around awesome individual – great fantasy writer, great advocate, great sense of humor, wonderful father, and just generally the kind of person you want in your life. I’ve linked his name to his blog, you should click on it.
oh, and also?

this weekend was the third annual grilled pizza cookoff!  and after all that brilliant WorldCon live tweeting last night, the least I can do is post some delicious pictures of all the incredible food we chowed down on. More home made pizza than you can shake a stick at. literally.  we had to cook in stages because it wouldn’t all fit on the picnic table. Also? there were epic desserts. observe!

herbed thin sliced potatoes, bacon, cheese, deliciousness!

Chicken Satay Pizza – awesomely delicious, unless you have a peanut allergy.

A Cincinnati chili pizza, with Chili, spaghetti, cheese and oyster crackers

fried onion and sausage pizza – this was my entry. should have stayed on the grill longer, the dough was undercooked.

so much food it didn’t all fit on the picnic table!

topping a Chicken Chimichurri pizza

a classic three cheese pesto pizza, with tomatoes and mushrooms

the kids when crazy for these two: a S’mores pizza and a classic Margherita pizza with fresh Mozzarella and lots of tomato sauce

still not full? there were a ton of desserts. Those cupcakes? had oreo cookies baked inside!

I need to read Among Others before the library gets angry and demands it back. It’s just been a busy few weeks, lol.

Those pizzas look delicious! I cheat when making homemade pizza and use lavash as a crust.

Thanks for the link to the Hugo list and your pizzas look yummy!

Yum!!!

So thrilled to see Among Others win the Hugo. That was such a special book, and let to so many great conversations around the blogging community. I found it very cool that not only did it celebrate a passion for reading SF/F but that its very existence fueled more of that passion. So cool.

Was also thrilled for artist John Picacio and his first Hugo win. Met him earlier this year after a few years of online conversations and he is a great guy and a talented artist. Very happy for him.

Oreo cookie cupcakes are simply the best! The pizzas all looked amazing too.

Those pizzas look goooooood! I’m looking forward to buy a book day; I’m hankering for some more Brandon Sanderson :)

OMG – I think I just gained an extra tyre looking at those pictures. Look good though.
Lynn :D

The Pizza looks so good. I like that idea using a large piece of dough. I usually make individual ones.

Also…Love your blog.

Found you on the BBAW list. I have visited before. Awesome blog.

little bits of dough are nice, because then every piece has a crusty bit, which makes eating it easier. Some people did really huge pizzas that barely fit on the cutting board, others did pizzas that were just smaller than a dinner plate. so much good food, i highly recommend summer cook-outs!

thanks for the kind words for my blog!

some of the books reviewed here were free ARCs supplied by publishers/authors/other groups. Some of the books here I got from the library. the rest I *gasp!* actually paid for. I'll do my best to let you know what's what.
